01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The care here is apparent from the first small dish brought to the table. Rather than a typical vinegared side, early-harvest fresh mozuku from Izena Island comes in a dashi-rich broth, with a soft-boiled egg stirred through. Its tender texture and mellow richness make a gentle start to the first drink.
On the second floor of a building in Shibuya’s Dogenzaka, 沖縄料理 琉歌 ゆいゆいさ~ serves island cooking that is best enjoyed by sampling a little of several dishes. The signature assortment of Okinawan small plates brings together sea grapes that pop, crunchy mimigā, gently sweet carrot shirishiri, and soft yushi tofu, arranged in a colourful spread. The seasoning is not too strong, letting the ingredients and dashi notes come through. Moving from one texture to another as you sip makes for an easy, lively meal.
Slow-cooked rafute is tender enough to come apart easily with chopsticks, its sweet-and-savoury umami spreading across the palate. Other dishes play up contrasts in texture, including fried jimami tofu in broth, crisp and fragrant on the outside with a rich, chewy centre, and a mozuku kakiage fritter with a notably light, crunchy coating. To finish, sizzling stone-bowl taco rice brings the fragrance of toasted rice and the richness of cheese, while soki soba, also available in a half-size portion, offers a soothing dashi broth and a satisfying close to the meal.
Drinks range from Orion draft beer to easy-drinking awamori cocktails and non-alcoholic options, making the selection welcoming whether or not you drink alcohol. The wood-toned interior includes counter seating, suiting anything from a drink after work to a lively gathering with friends—a chance to drop in for a taste of Okinawa amid the everyday.
